Cleanse Your Pantry

Cleanse Your Pantry

I am right in the middle of moving house, and like it or not, it’s time to get my old pantry cleansed and my new pantry restocked. It’s something we should do with the change of every season. You want to be confident that when you open your cupboard, at your fingertips you’ve got  healthy foods that inspire you to create delicious meals.  Here’s what I’ll be tossing and and what I’ll be keeping:

What to Toss:

1.  Table salt- table salt is over processed and lacks minerals; high salt diets cause 150,000 premature deaths in the U.S. each year.
2.  Sugar or artificial sweetener – sugar leaches calcium from the body and contributes to weight gain; artificial sweeteners taste awful and are made from totally foreign chemicals.
3.  White rice – the milling that converts brown rice into white rice destroys all dietary fiber and fatty acids, as well as more than 60% of Vitamin B3, B1, and B6, as well as other minerals.
4.  White pasta – egg, gluten, refined wheat make eating white pasta like eating cardboard;  it can raise your cholesterol and has very little nutritional value.
5.  Vegetable or canola oil – these oils are made largely from genetically modified crop, and contribute to heart disease.
6.  Sugary cookies – it should be obvious…sugar!
7.  So called health or diet bars – highly marketed diet bars have more in common with candy bars than with anything remotely healthy.
8.  Non-organic herbs – the difference between non-organic herbs and spices and organic herbs and spices will amaze you!
9.  Potato chips, packaged snacks – packed with hydrogenated oils and salts.
10.  White flour – it has been stripped of all nutritional value.
11.  Artificial maple syrup and non-raw honeys – it’s no better than white sugar.
12.  Ketchup,  processed  mustards and other condiments – filled with chemicals your body doesn’t know what to do with.
13.  Roasted salted nuts- roasted nuts are rancid.

What to Get (don’t be intimidated, just buy what you need!):

1.  Celtic sea salt, Himalayan pink salt,  or Herbamare – Celtic sea salt has stronger flavor and more minerals than regular table salt; it even has microscopic amount of sea life.  Herbamare is a blend of sea salt and herbs that packs a savory punch!
2.  Raw honey, xylitol, stevia, organic raw agave – raw honey is antibacterial, xylitol fights tooth decay, stevia is low calorie and plant based and totally harmless.
3.  Quinoa, spelt berries, brown rice, teff, millet, buckwheat, wild rice and amaranth – these great grains will support your energy. If you can find them sprouted, that’s preferable.
4.  Soba noodles, wakame seaweed, kelp noodles – nutrient dense.
5.  Extra virgin olive oil, coconut oil, flax-seed oil, walnut oil, Udo’s Choice oil blends – these fats will condition your skin while cleaning your arteries.
6.  Apple cider vinegar -pro-biotic and great for metabolizing fat.
7.  Organic dijon mustard- a staple that can be used in everything from marinades to salad dressings.
8.  Organic dried fruit and dehydrated veggie snacks – healthy, easy snack and salad topper.
9.  Organic raw sprouted nuts – cashews, walnuts, pistachio, almonds, and Brazil nuts are a great source of protein and healthy fats.
10.  Raw seeds – hemp seeds, chia seeds, pumpkin seeds, and sunflower seeds are also heart-healthy, anti-inflammatory additions for smoothies and salads.
11.  Beans – lentils, chick peas, and black beans are the easiest to digest and a low-fat source of protein.
12. Fresh and organic herbs and spices- fresh herbs and spices are best, but dried will work.  Organic herbs and spices taste phenomenal!
13.  Herbal and organic teas – green, yerba mate,  and chai are great for toning the system.
14.  Coconut water- very hydrating.
15.  Crackers – flax crackers, brown rice cakes are light on fat and satisfying.

It might seem like a lot of work, but cleansing your pantry will make you feel healthy without even putting a thing in your mouth!

Eating Well While Traveling

Feb 16, 2012 by Elissa Goodman

Eating Well While Traveling
I’m just back from a 24 hour trip to Arizona.  Traveling alone can be exhausting.  So to maintain my energy, I picked up a Total Greens with Lemon and Ginger from Earth Bar on the way to the airport.  While I was waiting to board the plane, I noshed on a healthy Greek Salad (made fresh every day and loaded with cucumbers, red onion, feta cheese with a simple vinagrette) from LaBrea Bakery.  Staying cleansed while traveling is a bit of an art.  Here are some of the tricks I’ve learned over the years:

1.  Eat a healthy snack or meal before you leave. Whether traveling by car or by plane, always be sure to have a big, dark leafy green salad before you get going.  Toss it with shredded beets, carrots, red onion, tablespoon crumble of goat’s milk or feta cheese, and a simple dressing of extra virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar.  When everyone else is eating bright orange and popped greasy things, you’ll be the chic and in control jet setter!
2.  Pack healthy snacks.  Even if it’s just a short flight from one city to another,  pack a snack;  you’ll be hungry when the plane lands and you’ve collected your luggage.  Try packing an a apple, banana, raw almonds, walnuts, dried figs, goji berries, sugar snap peas or carrots.  How jealous do you get when someone else is eating healthy and you’ve forgotten to pack a cleansing snack? Be the envy of every traveler!
3.  Hit the grocery. If you run out of snacks on your drive or after your plane trip, skip the  7/11′s and head into town to look for a grocery store.  Refill on the  healthy staples.
4. Treat yourself! There are so many products that are great for on the road.  I love these travel treats:
Ultima Powder (lemonade is my fave) is super hydrating and naturally sweet!
Justin’s nut butters or Artisana have travel friendly single serve packets (pair with apple, celery, banana)
Himalania has a five decadant goji berry mixes to choose from!
I’m not a big fan of bars, but Elemental Bars or Raw Revolution Bars are a travel must have! If you can’t get those,  Kind Bars and Luna Bars are also great and easily accessible.
5.  Eat restaurant smart. Check out a previous blog post on this topic HERE!

Raw Chocolate Valentines Day!

Feb 12, 2012 by Elissa Goodman

Raw Chocolate Valentines Day!

Valentine’s Day should be a day of relaxation. And the traditional gift of chocolate is known for its capacity to foster a peaceful mood.  But regular, processed chocolate is not the way to go. It is high in saturated fats, and frighteningly high in sugar.  While the calorie content in this kind of chocolate is high, the real problem is the processed ingredients.  So what I love to give and receive for Valentine’s Day is raw chocolate!   It has pure ingredients, and is high in an amino acid called phenethylamine (PEA).  The PEA in raw chocolate supports mood and sensation, making it a classic love food.  When you eat chocolate, you bring out natural feelings of well-being and with raw chocolate you can indulge your need for pleasure!  Plus, the calorie content is lower than processed chocolate and your body won’t store it as fat because of the pure ingredients!

My favorite high-quality organic raw chocoloate is Gnosis. My favorite organic raw cacao powders are Navitas and Ojio.

Gift of Love Chocolate

  • 1 cup raw organic chopped walnuts
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne powder
  • 1/3 cup top quality, organic cold-pressed coconut oil
  • 1/2 cup raw organic cacao butter
  • 1-1/2 cups raw organic cacao powder
  • 2/3 cup raw organic honey (heaping)
  • A good dash of Himalayan pink salt
  • A dash of vanilla bean

Measure the nuts, chili and cacao powder into a bowl and mix. Gently melt the coconut oil in a microwave safe container for 10-20 seconds or until liquid.  Remove and then gently melt the cacao butter the same way. Slowly add and stir the coconut oil into a the bowl with the nuts.  When fully mixed, slowly add and stir in the the raw honey.  Add a few shakes of the salt and some vanilla bean if you have it. Mix and mix well!

Line an 8×8 glass or ceramic dish with plastic wrap.  Pour the chocolate out into the lined dish and pop it in the freezer for 30 minutes to an hour to set. Remove from freezer and lift the chocolate from the dish with the plastic.  Remove the plastic and then cut into small pieces. I store the chocolate in a large glass jar between layers of waxed or parchment paper and keep it in the fridge

My Top Juicer

Feb 1, 2012 by Elissa Goodman

My Top Juicer

This juicer tops my list because it is so efficient- it can make an 8-ounce glass of juice in just five seconds. You can change the speed on the juicer for softer fruits and leafy greens like cantaloupe or spinach, or for denser foods such as apples or beets.  It is super consistent and you don’t have to cut or peel anything!
