The Importance of Sleep: Part 1

Mar 22, 2013 by

Yes, even I have a few sleepless nights: I stay out too late with friends or I’m up all night packing for that 6 AM flight time I ignored until midnight. I’ve also had a lot of sleepless nights tossing and turning endlessly, hoping to fall into a deep sleep but instead staring at the ceiling, wide-eyed with my mind racing. I do my best to live my healthiest life but there’s no green juice or supplement in the world that can counter a bad night’s sleep. You see it instantly on my face and I feel it instantly in my bones. How could I sit in front of my clients and tell them what to do to get healthy when I have new wrinkles popping up by the second, no color in my face, and barely enough energy to greet them? Yes, food, supplements and exercise help to repair your body, but sleep is the #1 necessity when it comes to healing and restoring you to your best self.

When my cleansers ask me what’s one thing they can do to enhance their program, I say sleep. Of all the supplements and extra activities I recommend, sleep comes first. We cleanse because we want to clear our bodies of toxins and live the purest, healthiest life possible. I believe in an ongoing cleansing lifestyle which is impossible to achieve without a good night’s sleep every night. Write this down and don’t take this lightly: YOU NEED SLEEP!

I’ve been listening to some webinars through the Sexy, Younger, You website and they are all incredible, but co-host Robin Nielson’s episode on sleep was truly sensational.

Here are 10 fascinating sleep facts:

1. Until 1910, when the light bulb became affordable to everyone, our bodies functioned in our natural state: we slept when it was dark and woke when it was light. During that time people slept 9-10 hours a night! Since 1910, on average, we are getting 500 less hours of sleep a year.

2. Melatonin, the sleep hormone and a major antioxidant in our body, is decreased when we get less sleep. Shortening this output puts you at risk for a lot of major disease: obesity, heart disease, inflammation, diabetes, sore joints and immune dysfunctions. The colors of the sunset actually trigger your body’s production of melatonin – nature is literally signaling your body to rest.

3. 75% of adults have at least one sleep problem such as waking during the night or snoring, and 54% experience symptoms of insomnia.

4. You can’t blame it on a small bladder: if you are sleeping well and your body is in balance, you shouldn’t have to get up to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night.

5. Signs of insomnia: trouble falling asleep, considering yourself a “night owl,” inability to sleep past the crack of dawn, waking up during the night for any reason, taking more than 10-15 minutes to fall back asleep if you wake up, waking up anxious or worried, waking up and needing to exercise or work before you can get back to sleep, waking up and needing to eat before you can get back to sleep.

6. Some researchers feel that every hour of sleep before midnight is equal to two hours of sleep after midnight.

7. Lack of sleep is the #1 stressor on your body. If you have the choice of sleeping in or getting up super early for a workout, choose to sleep in.

8. Sleep promotes your body’s production of antioxidants, our natural “killer cells,” keeping your immune system strong.

9. The phrase “sleep on it” is actually great advice – sleep improves memory, helps you solve problems better and makes your mind sharper.  While we sleep our brain actually categorizes all of the things it encountered the day before.

10. According to the National Institute of Health, 9 1/2 hours of solid sleep at least seven months out of the year (particularly during the fall/winter when our bodies most crave hibernation) is the minimum required to beat cancer, diabetes, heart disease and depression.

After finishing this blog post, an interesting article came out in the NY Times about a new study called, ” Lost Sleep Can Lead To Weight Gain.” This is worth reading!

I have so much great information on sleep that I had to split this into two parts. Next week, I’ll give you some scoop on how to improve your sleep and get snoozing!

St. Patrick’s Day Sweet Pea Hummus

Mar 15, 2013 by

It’s hard to forget that St. Patrick’s Day is this weekend, with all the local bars getting their advertisements waving. For those of you who will be enjoying this festive holiday from home and perhaps sharing a pint with some friends, I have the perfect appetizer. You may know that I am a hummus fanatic, and making a homemade batch is my go-to action whenever I host guests for dinner or my girls are looking for an after-school snack.  Last night I whipped up this sweet pea hummus from the beautifully done Everyday Raw Detox and as I am just munching on it with some raw carrots, I realized how appropriate my timing was.  I love the idea of subbing sweet green peas for chickpeas to switch up your typical hummus experience. It brings a new and interesting flair to this staple and peas are loaded with health benefits. They are loaded with anti-oxidants, will cut down on inflammation and are a great source of protein. Plus they support blood sugar regulation and will keep your heart healthy.

This is a simple and delicious treat you can enjoy with any freshly cut veggies- and a great way to sport that Irish green without chemical-laden food dye. Enjoy your weekend and may the luck of the Irish be with you!

Sweet Pea Hummus

Ingredients:

2 cups organic green peas (if frozen, thaw)

2 T organic tahini

1 T olive oil

juice of 1 organic lemon

2 tsp cumin powder

sea salt and pepper to taste

Directions:

Process all ingredients in a food processor until smooth. As water if needed to make a smooth consistency.

Raw Coconut Yogurt Kefir w/ Nut Crumble

Mar 7, 2013 by

Young And Raw Photo

I’m not a chef but as a nutritionist foodie, when I try something I love my instant thoughts are: what is in this? And can I make it at home?  I am in love with Erewhon’s lemon/lime coconut kefir yogurt which is made at the store.  If I could, I would have all my clients pick it up daily as it’s an incredible breakfast, lunch or snack option.  But I have clients all over the country and since Erewhon is only an option for local clients, I was determind to find a recipe that anyone could enjoy, wherever they are.

I found this recipe from Young and Raw and decided to give it a spin. The result was really tasty and the process surprisingly simple. I also made the delicious date/nut crumble which adds the perfect amount of sweetness and really makes it a great and complete breakfast, without any added sugar.  But I have to say, I missed the tangy citrus taste of the lemon and lime kefir I am so used to, so I went back to the drawing board.  I cut the vanilla and added in some fresh lemon and lime juice and it was perfect- I was in heaven.  You can also add a little stevia if you want to sweeten it more, but the crumble adds a lot of natural sweetness and I like including the nuts as a dose of protein.

Whichever your preference- smooth vanilla or tangy lemon & lime, this recipe is simple, delicious and a great alternative to any dairy-based yogurt. It includes a probiotic, which is the number one supplement I recommend as it promotes a healthy gut and clears your system of bad bacteria while keeping the good. Coconut kefir is another natural source of probiotics  and its benefits are kind of unbelievable. It aids in digestion, controls sugar cravings, cleanses the liver, contains tons of natural minerals that (among other things) will make your hair super shiny, increases energy and actually has a tonifying affect on the intestines that will literally flatten the abdomens. Pretty undisputably great, right?

Which kind will be your favorite?

Coconut Vanilla Kefir Yogurt

Servings 2

Ingredients:

2 cups coconut meat (if frozen, thawed)

1 T coconut kefir

1 tsp. dairy free probiotics (I recommend Garden of Life)

1 tsp. vanilla bean

½ cup raw coconut water

Coconut Lemon & Lime Kefir Yogurt

Ingredients:

2 cups coconut meat (if frozen, thawed)

1 T coconut kefir

1 tsp. dairy free probiotics (I recommend Garden of Life)

juice of 2 freshly squeeze lemons

juice of 1 freshly squeezed lime

½ cup raw coconut water

Directions:

Blend all ingredients in your Vitamix or blender until creamy and smoothie-like with no chunks left over.

Pour into a glass jar and cover with a mesh fabric like cheesecloth or nylon and an elastic. Leave out at room temperature for 12 hours and put into your fridge for one day.

Once you’ve gone through this process, your yogurt should have a slightly sour, tangy smell and taste and be ready to eat.

If desired, add crumble and/or sweeten with stevia.

Nut-Date Crumble:

Ingredients:

5 organice dates, pitted

¼ cup organic raw walnuts

¼ cup organic raw almonds

1-2 dashes of cinnamon

Directions:

Pulse dates in the food processor until they are in very tiny chunks, almost paste like but not quite. Remove from food processor and set aside in a bowl. Add walnuts and almonds to food processor (no need to clean it) and pulse until they are almost a flour, again into tiny chunks. Mix dates and nut mix in the bowl and add cinnamon and stir together until they are mixed well or combine with your hands. Crumble can be stored for 7 days.

My Go-To List of Cleanse Supplements

Feb 28, 2013 by

If you’re going to spend the time, money and energy investing in your health through a cleanse or detox program, why not make the best of it?  I have spent hundreds of hours researching, testing and trying countless different supplements.  As a creator of cleanse programs, I feel as though I am really in touch with what a cleanse or detox program provides and the best ways to enhance it’s many benefits as well as derail some of the symptoms people experience while on the programs.

Here are my go-to recommendations for supplementing a cleanse:

1. E3 Live Brain ON: E3 Live is 100% blue-green algae that is regarded as nature’s most beneficial superfood. I love this product. It is like a blast of health. E3 Live will make you feel like the life has just been pumped back into you. It is a rich sources of chlorophyll, amino acids, essential fatty acids and minerals and is the most nutrient-dense food known to mankind. These minerals and nutrients work together to help you perform at a higher level, increase energy and increase concentration. It lifts your entire mood and makes you feel incredible. I suggest taking at least 1 tablespoon daily either straight or putting it into a juice.

2. A Strong Probiotic (I recommend either Garden of Life RAW Ultimate Care or Dr. Ohhira’s Professional Formula): Taking a probiotic is, in my opinion, the simplest thing you can do to improve your health each day. These probiotics help clear out bad bacteria and bring in good strains and create a strong and healthy gut. Science has shown that we need healthy amounts of bacteria in our system to be able to treat and even prevent lots of disease.  I believe the gut is the core of all health- you truly cannot be healthy if your gut is not. Using a probiotic aids in digestion and the proper absorption of nutrients, this is where it all begins. I like both of these brands because they have billions of strands of fermented bacteria- it’s the real deal. Take one capsule first thing in AM when you wake up on an empty stomach.

3. Pectasol Detox Formula: Pectasol is an amazing product to take while detoxing, because while it eliminates toxic metals and pesticides like lead, cadmium and mercury, it doesn’t deplete your body of zinc, calcium or magnesium. What makes this a stronger detox formula is the alginates which bind to the toxins in your food right in the digestive tract. As a result, the toxins are eliminated before they even enter your bloodstream or your tissues. I have seen incredible improvements in people’s energy, mental fog, sleep, joint pain, sex drive ;) and on and on. Take 2 capsules firsth thing in AM when you wake up on an empty stomach.

4. Cell Food: My fiance loves to laugh at me when I put this product into his water before yoga and tell him that I just gave him some oxygen, but really that’s what this product does.  This product is full of minerals, enzymes and amino acids that uses a water-splitting technology to provide bio-available oxygen and these other nutrients directly to the cells. Cell Food flushes into your system, boosts it with antioxidants (it eliminates free radical activity by 27%), increases your oxygen uptake, decreases muscular fatigue, aids in detoxification and helps nutrients absorb more rapidly. Mix 8 drops into 8 ozs. of purified water 3x a day.

5. George’s Aloe Vera: This amazing aloe vera contains enzymes, minerals and anti-microbial and amino acids that aid digestion, reduce inflammation and help cleanse and sooth the body.  It’s the perfect addition to any healthy lifestyle to make sure that digestion happens smoothly and you never feel bloated from veggies, raw food, etc. Plus, it’s tasteless, which if you’ve had other aloe veras, you know is a good thing. Drink 4 ozs in the AM and 4 ozs before bed.

6. Magnesium GlycinateOne really common issue healthy eaters, and especially cleansers, experience is the inability to calm their body to be able to sleep.  Sleep is so important but the body is using all these amazing, nutrient-dense foods and trying to turn them into energy.  Magnesium is a sure-fire way to shut that off when you need it off. Magnesium is sort of a natural tranquilizer, it decreases the release of cortisol which is what interrupts your sleep.  Stress depletes magnesium and adds cortisol, so when you are stressed, you don’t get enough sleep due to low levels of magnesium which continues to add stress- it’s a bad cycle.  Taking magnesium orally is an easy way to break that.  Plus, it doesn’t knock you out so you feel out of it or wiped the next morning like a lot of over-the-counter sleep aids and it’s not addictive; you will just feel calm and ready for bed. I recommened taking at least 400-600 mg 30 minutes before bed.

These are all the supplements I wouldn’t go without while cleansing, but I actually use all of these products daily. Their benefits are just too incredible to not have them in my life every day!  Which supplements do you use every day?  Would you consider trying these ones instead?

Kale and White Bean Soup

Feb 25, 2013 by

It’s slowly but surely becoming a habit for my family and I to have soup at least once a week. Especially during this unpredictable weather lately, there’s always almost a gloomy day we can set our sights on for a cozy night in with some delicious, hearty soup.  As a nutritionist, it’s exciting for me that my daughters crave the  vegetable soup I make that is overflowing with fresh, organic veggies.  But as a mother, I fear the day they grow sick of it and their cravings are aimed at something a little less nourishing.

I have been blown away by all of the recipes I’ve tried from the NY Times “Recipes for Health” section so when I came across this simple but incredible looking soup I was ecstatic to try it. I made a few little alterations and it turned out to be this sensationally flavored, really hearty and warming soup- perfect for a night in with my fiancé and my kids. Plus the combination of white beans and kale made it different than our typical veggie soup, while still packing in a ton of nutrients. We do a lot of kale in my house- in smoothies, for salads, roasted for snacking, and I loved packing this nutritional powerhouse food into a soup as well. Kale is one of the most nutrient-dense foods, packed with fiber, iron, antioxidants, Vitamins A, K, C, calcium and also is a natural anti-inflammatory, supports your heart health and is a great detox food. You really cannot find a food healthier than kale. If you don’t love kale, this soup is an amazing way to get it into your diet as it wilts and absorbs all the flavors of the herbs around it- you may barely notice it’s there!

I know, I know, it’s hard to think of kale as a “comfort food” but this soup is so robust and calming, it nourishes every part of your body and soul. Next rainy day or next time you’re feeling a little under the weather, treat yourself to a bowl of this soup instead of your go-to comfort food. Guaranteed you’ll feel better while eating it and afterwards!

Kale and White Bean Soup

 Serves 4-6

Ingredients:

1 T extra virgin olive oil

1 medium organic onion, chopped

1 large organic carrot, chopped

1 stick organic celery, chopped

Himalayan pink sea salt to taste

2 large garlic cloves, minced

1 14 ounce carton (I don’t recommend buying the canned ones) Pomi organic chopped tomatoes, with juice

6 cups organic vegetable broth

1 T organic tomato paste

1 tsp. oregano

1 medium organic Yukon gold potato, diced

1 bay leaf

a couple sprigs parsley and thyme, chopped

½ pound organic kale, stemmed and chopped

1 can organic cannellini beans (or any white bean), drained and rinsed

freshly ground pepper

Directions:

Heat olive oil over medium heat in a large, heavy soup pot and then add onion, carrot and celery and a pinch of salt. Cook, stirring often, until the vegetables are tender, about 8 minutes. Add the garlic and cook, stirring, until fragrant, about 30 seconds.

Stir in the tomatoes and juice from the can, add another pinch of salt and cook, stirring often for 5 to 10 minutes until the tomatoes have cooked down slightly.

Add the water, tomato paste, oregano, bay leaf, potato, thyme, parsley and salt to taste. Bring to a boil, cover and simmer 10-15 minutes until the potatoes are just tender.

Add the kale and simmer another 10 minutes until the kale is tender and the soup is fragrant. Taste, adjust salt and pepper. Stir in the beans and heat through for 5 minutes.
